Tom Azevedo was born and raised in the Bay Area; he began carving animals out of wood at a very early age.
Azevedo's first insight into the art of wood sculpting was under the tutelage of renowned sculptor, Emil Janel, in San Francisco for several years. In Lake Tahoe, Azevedo began sculpting in earnest, studying with David Foster, during which time, Tom created his first bronze.
Azevedo enjoys his adventures in wood best, and says "My intent is to awaken in the viewer a response that is emotional with a nurturing feeling towards life and nature". He calls these adventures "wood movies".
Most of the time, Tom's favorite piece is the one he's working on or contemplating; he is able to return to each piece and recall the feeling that created it thus having his own journeys in sculpture.
